The fastest cure to this issue is smart line writing concepts, allowing you to write fluent parts that later weave into meaningful vertical structures. It's this slight shift in your process that will change the outcome.
Don't focus on chords but lines when you start sketching. And if you want to start with chords, no problem! There're so many ways to translate the vertical force into a horizontal one, but that's another subject!
